Weekend Snapshots || Another Day, Another Dog Walk

The title says it all really.

If you are asking me what I’m getting up to on the weekend, chances are, it will involve at least one dog walk. Usually a nice long jaunt on a Saturday and a well deserved rest on a Sunday. This weekend was no different. Or it would have been, had I also taken photos on the Sunday, but as it stands, it’s all dog walks and things that are green, with absolutely no proof that we left our house on Sunday, galavanted through town, spent the afternoon at a friends house – where Dog-Face behaved quite nicely, much to my pleasure – and then trudged all the way back home to the blissful sounds of Dog barking at strangers.

Lesson learnt: Dog-Face is a right cranky mare when she has had no sleep all day. Luckily the only evidence of that is my downtrodden mood after such a good day and a look of “oh please, no. Do not bark at this person as well” etched into my face.

Funny story: three days later, she’s good as gold and we are cancelling our trip to the sausage factory.

Let’s focus on the Saturday where we took a ride over to where Kris works and let Dog run wild through the fields of potatoes.

We spent about an hour or so plodding down the path without seeing another soul. We even lucked out with the weather, after being promised a mostly cloudy day, we ended up spending most of our time in the sun.

We never ended up going anywhere, we just walked in a straight line and hoped to find either a bit of shade or a log to sit on for a rest. We opted for shade and the dirt in the end due to a shortage of strategically placed logs.

And that’s how we do Dog Walk Saturdays, followed by Dog Sleeps All Day Sundays. Before I go, can I interest you in a game of Spot The Dog?

Weekend Snapshots || 70km by bike, no problem

Life As Unusuals || Lifestyle and travel blog. Weekend Snapshots :: 70km by bike? No problem.

I realise that I continually talk about riding my bike. It’s not to sound like a pompous douche, it’s just that I have no other form of transport. If I had a car, I’d be just as douchey writing about how I drive everywhere all the time. But, you know, the planet and stuff, so I have a bike and make douchey eco-comments instead.

So yes, another weekend and another bike ride. Sue me, the sun was out. It hardly ever happens here. I had to make the most of it.

I even had plans to visit somewhere, Enghiem, that elusive E in my ongoing A to Z of Belgium project which is still evading me. Seriously, the plans were set in stone. We had the route written on a post-it and everything.

Then I had a flat tyre.

Then we had to Google how to change said tyre and how to work my 5-year-old puncture repair kit. Spoiler alert: the first attempt was a shamble.

The second attempt was a bit more successful and is still holding strong so that’s a good thing.

The rest of the time was spent trying to understand why a round tyre would not becoming round when inflated. This lead to much frustration on the part of Mr. Oh-so-cool Kris and a little bit of laughing on my part. Who knew, Kris’ uber cool composure could be shattered by a tyre.

In the end, we managed to solve all the problems (puncture: keep fixing it until the repair sticks. Tyre: pump it up until it pops into shape when you give it a tug), it was time to head off to Enghien.

Or not.

It was now too late to cycle out to Enghiem, since it was 70km away and then we’d want to look around and finally the train back home at the end of the day.

So instead, we picked ourselves a route from the cycle-node network and decided that we’d spend the rest of the day cycling 70km from Leuven to Aarschot and back again.

You might think this was crazy, given how much I weeped about 30km when we went to the Ardennes, but the best thing about Flanders is that is just so flat.

So 70km, in a mostly flat route is pretty easy. Well, pretty easy in that I cycle 12km minimum most days of the week, have been doing it for a while and have been building up my distance on the weekend too kind of way. Also known as: being smug and sounding douchey.

Dammit, I was trying to reduce the levels of douchery.

There were a couple of highlights from our little trip like:

  • Very few hills
  • A friendly gentleman and his dog that stopped to chat to us whilst we were snacking on the side of the road.
  • Mostly good weather
  • Vineyards to see – not because I drink wine, but because I like the rows of grape bushes (trees?)
  • Orchards – for the same reasons as vineyards
  • Seeing some sunflowers in bloom
  • Getting to the end and not feeling like I might die

It was a good weekend. I would say, I’ll try not to bang on about riding my bike so much, but that would be a lie. What did you get up to this weekend?

Weekend Snapshots || An Afternoon Bike Ride

Life As Unusuals || Lifestyle and travel blog. Weekend Snapshots: An afternoon bike ride.

At the beginning of the year, I skipped all those resolutions and decided that the only thing I wanted to achieve this year was to make the most of my time. Being stuck in a job I hated made me very conscious of where my time was going and how many hours of it I spent mulling things over that had annoyed me during the day and not enjoying my free time because I couldn’t put aside those feelings of having to go back to work on Monday. Plenty of weekends would just pass me by because I felt like they were already ruined because I had to go back to work on Monday.

So, I wanted to start a-fresh this year. I wanted to make the most of each weekend, I wanted to get out there and explore, I wanted to make Saturday and Sunday worth something instead of focussing on Monday. But, that’s easier said than done when there’s nothing but rain every weekend. Thanks Belgium.

It took me a while to see reading as making the most of the weekend, now I enjoy a reading day and always put Sundays aside to catch up on my book, but Saturday’s, they are for adventures.

Adventures have been few and far between this year, but now the weather is (hopefully) getting nicer, summer is gracing us with its presence so I’m jumping on the adventure train – corny much? – and making the most of it.

Plus, I paid a lot of money for my bike and I need to earn that back either in exhaustion or leg muscles. The latter option preferably. And I’m also attempting to make it look like all I do is ride my bike, which isn’t too far from the truth. Bikes are such a convenient way to have a little weekend adventure. You can go just that bit further on them that it’s easy to get to a new place without really leaving where you live. That’s what we did this weekend.

Since Kris had to pop to work, we decided to just cycle further on in the same direction to a forest nearby and go check it out. We didn’t expect to be cycling down a tiny dirt track with stinging nettles on either side, or having to lift our bikes over fallen logs or to follow a perfectly sign-posted route only to lose it at some point and end up nowhere near where we planned, but you know, these things just happen. To us. All the time.

We didn’t go too far, despite being out for a few hours, since it was pretty slow going on all the strange tracks we ended up taking. I don’t think getting lost helped that. After exploring the forest, we cycled back through town, past Arenberg castle to feed the ducks and then home. The duck feeding was cut short by some seriously angry geese that insisted on hissing and yelling at me and then eating the food I’d put down. The cheek!

If you’re a fan of local adventures, if you want to get out on the weekends, but don’t want to travel too far, consider a bike. Or a bus pass. That’s what we used before the bikes. But bikes are more fun!

Making the most of the weekend: check. What do you like to do to make the most of your weekends?
